Growth Data Summit News Coverage

Last week, the PRiME Center hosted a data summit series to discuss The Missouri Growth Score Model and how it is being used to highlight school and instructional achievement. 

The PRiME Center welcomed various education stakeholders, community leaders, and school leaders to engage in a presentation and discussion around the Missouri Growth model and how we can use it to acknowledge and advance student success. We were also very grateful to have had a very special guest speaker, Missouri DESE Commissioner Dr. Karla Eslinger!

Our event in Columbia—hosted by The PRiME Center and supported by MCPSA—was more specifically a chance to celebrate schools’ impressive growth scores and connect with fellow educators to share best practices and policies.

PRIME Center hosts Student Achievement Growth conference on Mizzou Campus

“Members of the Policy Research in Missouri Education Center, or PRIME Center, tracked Missouri student achievement growth since the COVID-19 pandemic. St. Louis University researchers said Missouri school superintendents could use their reports to improve education in both urban and rural areas. Commissioner of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Dr. Karla Eslinger told a group of school superintendents the PRIME Center’s new research was an important resource. She made her comments during a conference at Mizzou’s Memorial Union. Eslinger said state lawmakers, educators, and school administrators for K-12 education could use the research to create better policies for elementary and middle school students.”

The PRiME Center highlighted the schools' growth since the COVID-19 pandemic in a statewide conference.

“The PRiME Center uses a student-growth-tracking model developed in the MU Department of Economics to show the trajectory of students across the state.

The executive director of the PRiME Center said the definition of growth in the organization's mind is more about development over time and less about single scores.

‘We think it is really important when we are talking about reading skills or math skills to not just look at a student's spring test score, but to look at how much distance they covered this year,’ PRiME Center Executive Director Collin Hitt said.”

Educators look to Missouri growth model to measure instructional effectiveness

“St. Louis University’s PRiME Center, a nonpartisan education think tank, held a half-day conference on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia Thursday to dig into how the state calculates academic growth and celebrates high-growth districts.

‘We are really interested in schools that are moving kids the most,’ PRiME executive director Collin Hitt told reporters. ‘We want to do better than we are.’

Hitt believes Missouri has the best formula for calculating academic growth, and the data generated by the formula can help the state identify the best teaching practices.”
